THE CARS est un groupe américain de new wave et de novo-rock créé en 1977 à Boston/Massachusetts par RIC OCASEK (chant/guitare, né RICHARD OTCASEK le 23/03/1949 à Baltimore dans le Maryland), BEN ORR (basse/chant, né BENJAMIN ORZECHOWSKI le 08/09/1947 à Cleveland dans l'Ohio et décédé le 03/10/2000 à Atlanta d'un cancer au pancréas), ELLIOT EASTON (guitare, né ELLIOT SHAPIRO le 18/12/1953 à Brooklyn), DAVID ROBINSON (batterie, né le 02/04/1953 à Boston) et GREG HAWKES (claviers/sax/choeurs, né à Washington). Split en 1988.
